Sarah Manton's website

Her layout is elegant and easy to read.

The paper and textiles are shown in the background - making it look like a desk space whilst still keeping it professional. The texture of the embossing of her title on the paper is a clever way of showing some of the designs she does. She also has a simple colour scheme and a couple of fonts to make her website easy to follow.

I need to look at what else I want to include on my website, including a gallery page to show off some of my work and an info page about me and my work. As well as this I want to look at my front cover design and see what I can do to make it look more attractive and professional.

Key things Sarah mentioned:

Sell my work for more

- People will be happy to buy them

- Put your value into your work

Emphasise to your client why you do what you do and get them to trust you

- They chose you for a reason

Don't fall out with customers or clients

- You don't know if you will meet them or be influenced by their actions in the future

Talk about what you are passionate about

- Talk about my work rather than me

Do Not Procrastinate

- Doing work

- Sending emails

- Make a timetable and stick to it

- Have certain days/ hours to get specific things done.

ie. 5 hours of coursework on Monday plus lectures. 4 hours of pet portrait painting and work (Matalan) on Tuesday etc. etc.

with one hour a day to go through emails and plan for the upcoming days.

- Set small goals for a deadline rather than a last minute panic before the final deadline

- set deadline as a week earlier so I have time for unforeseen circumstances

Saying no is ok!

- Work out what projects I don't want to do so I know what to say yes to

- This may not come naturally but will be learnt over time

Contracts

- Get things in writing saying exactly what you are going to do

time

costs

if they want more it costs xyz...

- You can find free contract templates if you are freelancing

AOI template

- Make sure you have written down what you are going to do and make sure everyone agrees

- You can get a deposit so you know they are going to pay

Get involved in the bigger stuff so you can make the connections

- People will want you to work for them again next time - get them to pay

Relationships

- Friends, colleagues, family, customers, clients

- Connections will get you very far

When talking to the clients about brief write notes

- Small little things they say may help you to do what they want

- Take time just for them to talk about themselves/ their project

- reply to clients immediately

Even if it's just saying "I've heard from you and will get back to you soon".

Try to get repeat customers

- Interact with your clients and form a good relationship
