Looking at the gin bottles in my Uncle and Aunt's collection. They have a variety of different types. Some because they knew they liked the taste and some because they "looked cool".

Gin bottles are all very unique with interesting designs. There isn't a standard gin bottle shape as with beer or vodka bottles. Each bottle is very different in the shape, colour, etching and embossing of the glass. Some bottles have labels on them whereas others are etched straight onto the bottle.

Scilly Spirit Island Gin

The gin bottle is shaped to look like a lighthouse to represent the Island that it comes from; as well as the blue bottle colour which represents the ocean water surrounding the island. The idea that the bottle will be kept after the gin has been drunk as a collectable means there is less packaging waste. A cork with LED light can also be bought to make it light up like a lighthouse.

Gin Mare Mediterranean Gin

SeriesNemo - Commissioned to design the bottle and packaging.

The shape, colour and design have been created to reflect the Mediterranean environment. The bottle represents both the ocean and the sky, with the specific blue and white colours used to show this. This bottle shape is very unique and makes you double-take when looking at the bottom of it, due to its asymmetric design.

Bombay Sapphire Gin

This bottle has been created so that when a light shines on it, it looks like the gin is glowing.

The name Bombay Sapphire was inspired by the 182-carat gemstone 'Star of Bombay'. This also inspired the colour and design of the bottle.

The theory is that the bottle's shape traps the drinks' smell for longer. This is very important as it is thought that the sense of taste is hugely impacted by the sense of smell. The shape is also meant to keep the bottle cooler for longer

The engraving on the bottle allows for a large amount of detail to be captured; it's especially beautiful when the light hits it.

Brecon Botanicals

This bottle is made of very thick glass making there look like more gin in the bottle than there is. The black and white colour scheme keeps it looking very simplistic and elegant.

The backing label is shown through the bottle, distorted by the gin within. This gives an interesting three-dimensional view of the design making it look interesting from all different angles. The bottle looks more like a wine bottle than a traditional gin bottle due to its elongated shape.

Schlichte Gin

German Gin Brand

This gin is presented in an earthenware bottle which gives it a very traditional look. The colour of the bottle is also very traditional. This is the only bottle out of the ones I have seen that isn't transparent/ translucent so you can't see the gin in it. Because the bottle is so unique it means it stands out on the shelves in comparison to all the glass bottles.

The Botanist Gin

https://www.thebotanist.com/pages/our-spirit = shows a 3D view of the bottle

"Did you know the lettering on our bottle is actually the Latin names for each of the Islay botanicals?

The botanicals foraged on Islay were chosen for both their individual properties and for how they complemented one another. There are 11 different plant families represented, from 22 different species - hence the red number taking pride of place on our packaging." - @thebotanistgin instagram

The bottle design has been really carefully thought out and the embossed letters all the way around make an interesting texture that draws the eye and makes the consumer want to pick it up and touch it.

Mermaid Gin

Bottle designed by Xavier Baker and Conrad Gauntlett

This bottle has been designed to be environmentally friendly. It has been made from sustainable and recyclable materials.

Created on the Isle of Wight the aim was to create a bottle representing the sea and marine environment as well as the mermaids.

The bottle shape and colour reflect that of a mermaid with the wider top and thinner bottom representing the mermaid tail shape. The fish scales also make the bottle very eye-catching as the texture distorts the light and makes the bottle stand out off the shelf.

Key things they mentioned:

There has to be a dialogue

- designers work with others

- people live with the design experience - they need to like it

Find partners and organisations

- grants can come from lots of places

- you can get money from several places for one project

I'm not on my own when I finish

- I can talk to lecturers after I have left for any advice or help

The art on lorries project is really interesting as there are so many different styles used and this gets the artists' designs out there so the consumers can see it. This benefits both the lorry company and artists as this collaboration makes the lorry companies look good and interesting rather than just a plain ugly lorry and also advertises the artists work.
