I wanted to try hand etching before machine etching so I could get an understanding of the process and how the light shines through the glass and through the parts that have been etched.

I Practiced on an old honey jar - experimenting with different speeds and pressures on the etching tool. I attempted basic shapes and letters to see how they looked. This has allowed me to understand how the tool works and therefore I can create my developed designs with this in mind.
As a first attempt, I think it went well and I learnt a lot about how the etching looks under different lighting. The next stage will be to look at the glass with lighting that you would find in a bar - especially on the drinks shelf. I will also need to look at whether the bottle needs colour or other labelling as well as the etching.
I noticed how much you can see etching from one side of the jar through the other side which is important to keep in mind, and will also have to look at how adding liquid to the bottle will affect the design.
